Why Charter Schools Use Lottery
Charter schools in Texas, like Trinity Basin Preparatory, often have more applicants than available spots for certain grades or campuses. To ensure the admission process is fair and equitable, state law requires that when demand exceeds capacity, students are selected randomly through a lottery. This prevents bias and gives every applicant an equal chance at enrollment.

How the Lottery Works
Application Window: Families submit applications during the designated period, November 3rd – December 1^st.  Only applications received by the deadline are included in the lottery.

Random Selection: The lottery randomly selects students for available seats in each grade and at each campus. The process is fully transparent to ensure fairness.

Waitlist: Students not selected are typically placed on a waitlist in the order they were drawn. If spots open later, waitlisted families may be offered enrollment.

Timeline
Lottery Draw: The lottery takes place during the first week of December.

Notification: Selected families are notified shortly after the lottery.

Enrollment: Accepted students complete their enrollment for the upcoming 2026-27 school year.

If more families apply than there are spots, children not selected in the lottery are placed on a waitlist. When a spot opens, the next family on the list will receive an email offer. Families must respond quickly to accept, or the spot goes to the next family. The waitlist remains open until all spots are filled or school begins. Being on the waitlist doesn’t guarantee a spot, so be sure to check your email regularly.

Accepting your child’s spot does not finish the enrollment process. After you accept, you will receive an email with instructions to complete the state-required enrollment registration. This process includes creating a Skyward Q account for your new student and completing all registration forms required by the State of Texas. You will need these documents in digital form (scanned or photographed).

Documents Needed for Enrollment:

• Child’s birth certificate or passport
• Immunization records
• Parent/guardian photo ID (and legal guardianship documents, if applicable)
• Child’s Social Security card (preferred)
• Previous school records: report cards, special education IEP or 504 documents
• Discipline records, if applicable

At TBP, children can apply for Pre-K starting November 3rd through December 1st. To apply for PK3, a child must be 3 years old by September 1 and for PK4, a child must be 4 years old by September 1 and meet state eligibility requirements for free Pre-K.

We begin accepting all Pre-K applications on November 3rd. Applications submitted between November 3rd and December 1st will go through the lottery the first week of December 2025. Families will either receive a pre-offer for a spot or be placed on a waitlist. Starting in April 2026, families with pre-offers will receive instructions to complete the eligibility requirements, and final offers will be confirmed at that time.

We are not able to qualify students for state-funded Pre-K until April 1, 2026. Beginning on that date, families whose children are selected will receive an email offering a spot. To accept the spot, your child must meet eligibility requirements. After accepting, you will receive a link to verify eligibility. Once your child is confirmed eligible, you will get instructions to complete enrollment through Skyward Q for the 2026–27 school year.

Students who qualify for state-funded Pre-K will receive a final offer along with instructions to complete enrollment registration in Skyward Q.

Students who do not qualify for state-funded Pre-K until April 1, 2026 will not receive a final offer and will be placed on a non-eligible waitlist. Once all eligible applications have been processed, any remaining open spots may be offered to non-eligible students. These non-eligible Pre-K spots are usually not offered until August 2026. Re-enrollment is our annual process to ensure every currently enrolled student has a secured seat for the upcoming school year. Each November, families are asked to complete this process so we can plan classrooms, staffing, and resources effectively.

We’ve made it simple! Instead of completing multiple steps, you now only need to complete one easy step in Skyward Q. The process takes about 15 minutes—just review and update your family’s information to make sure everything is current. Once completed, your child’s seat for the next school year is secured and ready for the first day of school in August.

Completing re-enrollment early ensures your child’s spot, helps us plan effectively, and sets your family up for a smooth start in August.

Important:
If your child will not be returning, you must complete the Not Returning 2026-27 School Year Form instead. Submitting this form gives up your child’s seat for the upcoming school year.

If your family later decides to return, your child will need to complete a new student application, submit all required documents, and applications are processed in order, and your child may be placed on a waitlist.
